A strut with infinitely adjustable thermal expansivity and length

    Get PDF
A tubular strut with an integral mechanism for adjusting its thermal expansivity and length was developed to fulfill the stringent thermal stability requirements anticipated for the metering truss in the Large Space Telescope. Its features may be advantageously applied to a general variety of structures and precision mechanisms where dimensional control of component elements in a dynamic thermal environment is required. Detail, design, fabrication, and test of a developmental strut are discussed

Large Farms and Small Businesses: The difficult path toward development in rural China

The "Chinese Economic Miracle" of sustained growth since the 1970s has been thoroughly explored by many economists. So, too, has the obvious dichotomy between China's urban industrial sector and its rural agrarian economy. What has kept China's industrial development from migrating outward from its cities and into its countryside? When will the industrial revolution in Chinese agriculture begin? This paper examines a series of obstacles to the development of an industrial agricultural system in selected communities in China, contrasting government's goals for development with a realistic assessment of the economic characteristics of China's rural areas. The first section of this paper addresses the development of China's modern agricultural system, and the systems of land trading utilized by rural Chinese. The second section examines the impact of formal and informal financing on the development of rural businesses, as well as the development of a microfinance market in China's rural areas. Together, analysis of these issues demonstrates that China's government must address issues of property rights, access to capital, and social welfare if agricultural industrialization is to be encouraged

    Invariants of 2+1 Quantum Gravity

In [1,2] we established and discussed the algebra of observables for 2+1 gravity at both the classical and quantum level. Here our treatment broadens and extends previous results to any genus gg with a systematic discussion of the centre of the algebra. The reduction of the number of independent observables to 6g−6(g>1)6g-6 (g > 1) is treated in detail with a precise classification for g=1g = 1 and g=2g = 2.Comment: 10 pages, plain TEX, no figures, DFTT 46/9

Kaon photoproduction on the nucleon with constrained parameters

The new experimental data of kaon photoproduction on the nucleon, gamma p -> K+ Lambda, have been analyzed by means of a multipoles model. Different from the previous models, in this analysis the resonance decay widths are constrained to the values given by the Particle Data Group (PDG). The result indicates that constraining these parameters to the PDG values could dramatically change the conclusion of the important resonances in this reaction found in the previous studies.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, talk given by Ryky Nelson at Fourth Asia-Pacific Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics 2008 (APFB08), Depok, Indonesia, August 19-23, 200

Newspaper Reportage and its Effect towards Promoting Agricultural Development in Nigeria

    Get PDF
This study examined the coverage of agriculture between January and December (2007) in the Nigerian press. The method adopted was content analysis and 288 issues of 3 selected newspapers were analyzed; Guardian, Tribune and Punch. 5 research questions were raised and adequately substantiated on newspapers coverage of agricultural programs and development in Nigeria. The findings of the study however, revealed that the Nigerian press did not give sufficient coverage to issues on agriculture in comparison to other sectors of the Nigerian economy. Furthermore, the paper observed that issues on agriculture did not receive favourable coverage by the newspapers. The paper therefore suggests that the press should endeavour to give adequate attention to various issues on agriculture as well as its developmental programs in its reportage so as to facilitate sustainable development in agricultur

The Effect of E-portal System on Corporate Image of Universities

    Get PDF
Internet connectivity in tertiary institutions in Africa has been summarized in three characteristics - too little, too expensive and poorly managed (African Tertiary Institutions Connectivity Survey (ATICS), 2006 report). The Internet portal system offers educational organizations the ability to track students’ needs and promote their programs and plans. This paper examines the effect of portal systems in promoting the corporate images of Universities, whereby Six Universities in Nigeria were used as an example. Survey was adopted as the method and six hundred respondents were randomly selected for this study. Three hypotheses were tested and analyzed using t-test and correlation analysis. The paper recommended that was a dire need for universities to engage the services of expert web-designers with regard to effective projection of their corporate image through graphics, colour letterin
